For a film to be classed as a short film it has to follow a series of codes and conventions, which all short films include. One short film that follows these codes and conventions, is 'The Desk', which is about a teenage boys experience when moving into a new school. I've analysed this short film by seeing in which ways it follows the typical conventions of short films, as it will help me when choosing what to include in my film. Some codes and conventions 'The Desk' includes are:

 

• The desk choses to only have 2 main charecters in there short film, which are the schoolboy and Julie. This is because it is important to portray the main charecters stroyline within a few minutes, alowing the audience to relate and understand the charecter. The choice of using two teenagers as the main charecters also helps the audience rtelate to the storyline, as the main audience of people who watch short films are of the same age.

• Similarly to all short films, the desk includes a dramatic twist, when the teenage boys class gets moving, meaning that he will no longer be able to interract with Julie. This creates tension within the audience, as they are unsure if Julie and the boy will ever be able to meet each other, as they had spoken about. Creating tension is crucial in a short film, as if done correctly, such as in the desk, it can make the film gripping and keep the audiences attention.

• The desk also creates its short film on a low budget, as short films usually don't have a lot of money to make the film. The desk gets around this obstacle, by using unknow actors and only using 2 different locations.

• Short films usually base their storylines on every day situations, which helps the audience relate to the charecters and means they can really feel what they are going through. The desk does this accuratly, as its storyline revolves around a boy meeting a girl that he likes at school, which is a very typical and relateable situation.
