The Most Beautiful Man In The World Film Analysis

In the short film 'The most beautiful man in the world' various techniques have been used in order to present the stranger in a bad way throughout the film so that the audience create a negative opinion of him, but then at the end they flip the audience's opinion, as the straner is shown to not be the person the audience thought he was. This relates to my short film, as in my film I want to use the same method, however in reverse, making the audience believe that my charecter is innocent, when in fact he isn't.

One way in which this is done, is through the use of camera work. For example, throughout the film, there are a series of close up shots of the little girls face. This is used to show her facial expressions, which show how she doesn't seem to have a care in the world, which emphasises her age and therefore her innocence. Another camera shot used, is the establishing shot of the field. The shot shows how the setting is a huge field, which is completley empty, with nobody in sight. Therefore when the stranger comes into the scene, it makes the audience question why he is there, as it seems odd that somebody would just be wondering around such an isolated place.

Another way in which this technique is presented, is through the use of editing. One way in which is this done, is by fading the shots of the young girl in her living room together. The fading effect makes it seem that the girls life is very repititive, and the days seem to merge into one another. This makes the audience feel sympathy for the young girl, and even makes them want her to escape from this one room and explore. Aswell as this, lighting is used to change the audiences opinion of the stranger. Towards the end of the scene, there are a series of alternating shots between the stranger standing in the field, and the girl sitting inside her house. This creates a juxtaposition between the two areas, as the house is very dark, and has a gloomy and depressing atmosphere. Whereas the field is very bright, and everything has a golden effect on it, which gives it a positive and hopeful effect. This therefore portrays the the outside of the house, including the man, as a better place to be then the girls house, which sets the view that the man is in fact just a nice friendly guy.

Aswell as this, sound is a technique regularly used in the clip. One example of this, is the use of a low tone; for example when the stranger is first introduced in the middle of the field. Because there is a low tone, it shows the reader how the field is an isolated place, where not many people go. Therefore, for a man to randomly appear when there is a little girl in the field, makes the audience feel eeiry and portray the stranger as someone perculiar. Another example is the use of digetic sound. For example, at the beggining of the clip, where the girl is sitting in her house, there is lots of emphasis on the digetic sound around her, such as her family having conversations, the phone ringing etc. This shows how the young girl is never the centre of attention, and she is constantly ignored by her family, making the audience feel pity towards the girl.

Mis en scene is another technique used to help portray charecters in a certain way. One example of this, is the use of costume in the short film. For example, the stranger is not wearing a t shirt, and due to the camera shots used, he looks like he is half naked, which as he is in contact with a child, seems very strange and almost peadophilic. Therefore, this builds up an image to the audience that this stranger has approached the young girl to take advantage of her. Another example is the use of props in the short film, for example the little bug thats on the girls shoulder. The use of the bug, means that the stranger makes skin to skin contact with the child, which as they have just met each other, seems rather odd, and puts the audience on edge as they don't know where this is going to lead. However, this is the contrasted as the man gently places the bug in the girls hand, whioch is the moment when the audiences opinion of the stranger starts to change, as he is presented as a frieldnly man who is just trying to help a young girl.
