Filming Practice

Before filming my short film, I wanted to get some practice using the camera and editing footage. In the clip on the left, I have practiced using different types of shots, such as:

  • Close up shot

  • Shift pull

  • Tracking shot

  • Shot reverse shot

When edited together well, these shots give films a professional look.

I always wanted to practice using the white balance settings on the camera that I was going to use to record my short film. The white balance settings can change the colour of a clip, making it lighter, darker, positive or negative. These different settings can help portray different moods, and also make the audience feel a certain way about what they are seeing.

Aswell as camera work and white balance settings, I also wanted to practice using digetic and non-digetic music, which would be vital in my short film. Therefore, as the clip on the left shows, I practiced using:

  • Ambient - sound that displays to the audience the location/setting

  • SFX - sound used for the narrative

  • Music - sound used for the atmosphere

  • Voiceover - narrated as someones thoughts
